One of the things I love about yoga is its unique blend of strength building and mind calming poses. If you think about it, it doesn't make much sense. I mean, how can you be so calm when your body is shaking and sweat is dripping down your arms forming a puddle on your mat? It's a challenge of the most calm form. No need for huffing and puffing, no need to pump yourself with loud music. Just breathe and focus on the drishti, engage the muscles, and breathe some more.
Today's I'm sharing five poses to build strength throughout the whole body. Aim for 3 - 10 full, deep breaths in each pose. Ready? Let's hit it.
1. Chair pose - This is going to burn the legs. Tip: Sit low, squeeze the legs together, and avoid doing this.
2. Warrior 2: This is going to torch the arms & make those legs shake. Tip: Make your arms so strong that if someone came by and tried to push them down, they wouldn't move. And avoid doing this.
3. Eagle pose: Another one that tests the legs, but surprise! It boasts the added challenge of being on one leg. Just breathe.
4. 3 legged dolphin pose: This bad boy is going to build shoulder strength and develop the upper body foundation needed for forearm stand and scorpion. Tip: Keep pushing the mat away from you with the forearms.
5. Crow: Here we've got a pose that looks like we're balancing on the hands, but really the core is the hero of this pose. Use your core strength to lift the legs up rather than resting the legs on the arms. Tip: Look down, but out in front of you about three feet.
