This year was crazy for me. There was a ton of travel (Cayman Islands, Kenya, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Santorini, back and forth to North Carolina for my 300hr teacher training, Tennessee, Chicago, St Louis, Kansas City, Amsterdam, Nice, Paris, Austin, Santorini again, Italy, Costa Rica) and while traveling, I tried my best to read. I love reading all sorts of books, but when life is really hectic, I like my books to be somewhat of an escape from the day to day pressures of life. I took a look at all the books I read - many of them were Colleen Hoover types - somewhat fluffy but also dramatic and yet had a reliable feel-good ending - and while they were ok, I wouldn’t recommend all of them. Here are the top six books I would recommend, however, out of all the books I read last year.
Verity - This thriller kept me up so late - I could not put it down. The edge of your seat read makes you second guess your gut instinct from the get go, and by the end your mind is blown. Such a good book!
One Day in December - This is a good, quick, feel-good read that wasn’t too light or fluffy, but not too deep, either. I like these types of reads after reading something especially heavy or dry.
Girls Burn Brighter - This was a really, really dark book about family, friendship and culture in India. It was excellent, but you’ve got to be in the right mindset for it.
Educated - I know I was late to the game on this one, but it was one of those ‘oh-everyone-has-read-it-so-maybe-I-should-pick-something-different’ situations until I ran out of options and then finally relented and picked this one up. I don’t know why I waited so long, it was as good as everyone says.
Buddha’s Brain - This was such an educational, eye-opening read. If you’re interested in the deeper aspects of yoga, how the mind works, and how meditation can affect our minds, this is a great pick.
The Hate U Give - Fantastic, fantastic read. I was sucked in from page one, and whipped through it in just two or three days. I then stumbled upon the movie while on a flight, and I have to say - it was nearly as good as the book!
