Now that I finally have a yard, I’ve been obsessed with learning how to grow my own food. I started with transplanting some herbs, but pretty sure that doesn’t exactly count as growing your own food since the plants were mature when I bought them, but I grew these microgreens with the help of my friend Ashley this winter and I’m so proud! If I can do it, literally anyone can do it!
First, you’re going to need a grow light. My dad let me use his, but here’s an affordable grow light for under $25. Then you’ll need a tray with holes and a drip tray. And of course, the microgreens seeds (here’s a great affordable option). And dirt - or in this case, I used garden coir.
I put down about two inches of soil, and sprinkle a bunch of microgreens seeds over the soil.
Then, spray the soil with water until quite damp. I spray every day for about 7 days or so.
This was day 7. On the 8th day - or when they’re just a tad taller, I harvest them by cutting as close to the soil line that I can. I make little salads or add it as a garnish to meals for added nutrients. It feels so satisfying to grow your own food!
