It's been a while since we've done a Weird Health Trends post, but the other day a friend was going to his cryotherapy appointment and I jumped at the opportunity to try it. I've heard so many people rave about it and figured I should give it a go.
Cryotherapy is the local or general use of low temperatures in medical therapy. You essentially stand in what looks like a stand-up tanning bed, but tanning lights that come on, extreme cold comes out. You step inside, wearing your underwear, socks and slippers, and they'll give you a pair of gloves. Then, the timer comes on (3 minutes, ideally, but you can do less if it's too much for you).
Among others, the health benefits are said to include:
- improved muscle recovery
- pain relief
- reduced inflammation
- reduced anxiety and depression
- improved symptoms of eczema
I found the experience to be okay. I wouldn't say I necessarily enjoyed being in it (I hate being cold), but it wasn't awful. I noticed two immediate differences afterwards: 1) I felt a surge of energy and improved mood afterwards that lasted for about two hours, and 2) this morning I woke up looking and feeling pretty lean. As I mention in the video, I've cleaned up my diet over the last two weeks, so it could've been that, but it also could've been the cryotherapy. I'd like to keep going to see if I notice any longterm improvements. Above is the video I shot detailing my experience - have you guys tried cryotherapy? Thoughts?!
