Since I've been getting a lot of workout questions in the last few months, we're gonna test out a new series, Workout Wednesday. This is where I'll talk about what I do to complement my yoga practice. I'd love to hear what you do to complement your practice down below in the comments along with any questions you have for future workout posts.
This won't be the most exciting Workout Wednesday post because I was traveling most of last week. I had great intentions of working out while on the road - my hotel had a gym and I also brought along my resistance bands but I quickly realized those were lofty goals.
In the back of my head I want to really make an effort to get to the gym when I can because I have a big photoshoot coming up (can't wait till I can share!) but it just wasn't happening this time around for me. I don't know about you but when I'm on the go, running around all day, not eating my normal foods, and not sleeping as well as usual, I just feel depleted of energy. And when that happens, I know that I need to rest and take a long bath or my body will throw a fit and I'll be down and out for days if not a full week.
When I got back, I headed out to the gym the next day and did:
30 clean squats
30 thrusters
30 deadlifts
30 burpees over the bar
30 pushups alternating elbows and arms out
30 box jumps
30 roll out barbell abs
30 kettle bell swings
10 pull ups
Normally I do a workout similar to this but with reps of 50 and while I wouldn't exactly say that I sail through that workout, it's not normally as miserable as this was! After the first exercise I decided to keep it at 30 because I legit almost died and I wish I were exaggerating. At the end of the workout I had to lay down and put my feet up haha, it was terrible! The struggle is so real when you take a few days off and then come back to it and everything is on fire and you feel like death warmed over. Sigh.
The next day, I went back at it but I was so inexplicably sore that I decided it would be smart to go easier on myself with:
spent about 20 min finding my 1 rep max front squat (pitiful, I did 15 more pounds four weeks ago but didn't have it in me that day)
10 toes to bar
5 rounds of 5 sumo squats
5 rounds of 5 deadlifts
5 rounds of 12 walking lunges w 25 lbs plate overhead
handstand practice
Yesterday I took the day off to rest and recover because today I am hopping a flight to Detroit, where I'll be for about a week. I'm definitely looking forward to settling down for a bit so I can get back in the swing of things.
I absolutely love Brad's kale chips so when I was in Baltimore for ExpoEast (full post coming soon), I basically ran up to their booth and declared my love for all things Brad. The guy at the booth probably thought I was nuts but told me I should try their newest product, broccoli poppers, and he threw me a bag. Guys! So good. I actually like them better than the kale chips because the kale can kind of crumble in your hands and is not a good snack food for driving or watching tv on the couch. The poppers are better for those sorts of things because it's more substantial and doesn't crumble in your hands. Love.
Let's talk: Do you ever feel like death warmed over after you step back into a gym following a short break? How do you overcome that? Do you ease in or just go HAM? Teach me your ways!
