Disclaimer: Our resident food writer Allison and I had so much fun collaborating on this post, which is brought to you by AllWhites 100% Egg Whites®, which you can find on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Egg whites are underutilized, in my opinion. It's so easy to crack an egg into a skillet and fry it up. It takes little effort to whisk a few eggs together for scrambled eggs. Still, there are times when I want an eggy meal that's a little bit lighter. Before I go to the gym, some pre-workout meals or snacks can leave me feeling weighed down and sluggish, physical feelings that I'd rather not experience if I'm about to launch into some cardio or strength training. Lo and behold, egg whites to the rescue!
AllWhites 100% Egg Whites are a lifesaver when it comes to whipping up a satisfying pre-workout meal in a short amount of time. Why get sticky fingers from cracking eggs and spend time separating yolks when these egg whites can be poured straight from the carton? That alone saves me a few precious minutes of my time! I take comfort in knowing that I'm eating nothing but 100% egg whites with no fillers or surprise ingredients. All I'm left with is an egg white-based meal that's rich in protein (5 grams per serving) with no additional cholesterol or fat.
My egg white pre-workout meal of choice is simple and can be dressed up to your liking: Poached Egg Whites with Fresh Herbs! With spring around the corner, so many herbs are starting to pop up at my local farmers' markets. Conversely, you can find wonderful herbs at your local grocery store. I serve mine alongside some whole grain bread and vegetables, but you can serve your egg whites however you prefer!
This meal, thanks to AllWhites 100% Egg Whites, gives me that great boost I need before I start any workout.
Poached Egg Whites with Fresh Herbs
Ingredients:
- 4 cups water
- 3 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
- 6 tablespoons AllWhites 100% Egg Whites
- 2 - 3 tablespoons fresh herbs of choice (suggestions include chives, basil, tarragon, cilantro, or dill)
Directions:
1.) In a medium-sized saucepan, bring water to a slow boil over medium. Add vinegar, reduce heat to a simmer.
2. Place egg whites into a small bowl. Hold bowl close to the water's surface and carefully pour the egg whites into the water; cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until whites are completely set. Gently lift egg whites out of water with a slotted spatula or slotted spoon.
3. Place egg whites on plate; sprinkle with herb(s) of choice serve and desired sides!
And now, here's Candace, to share a workout to complement the recipe.
You all know I love hiit workouts because they're effective in whipping me into shape, and I love how quickly they go by. In ten minutes, you can build up a sweat and before you know it - you're done! This workout does just that, and here's how it goes:
Minute 1: Walking lunges. Keep your legs at about 90 degrees when you lunge.
Minute 2: High knees. Jump and lift your knees as high as you can, one at a time.
Minute 3: Plank Hold. Try to zip up through the midline to activate your core. Bonus points if you want to go up and down from your hands to your forearms for the duration of the minute.
Minute 4: Push ups. These are tough, especially for a full minute, but do what you can! You also have the option to go down onto your knees if you need to modify.
Minute 5: Rest.
Repeat the whole thing one more time through to complete ten minutes!
