Whether you live in a bustling city or a sprawling country estate a garden can be an oasis from the hastiness of life. It can be a place of relaxation, meditation, or just a place to escape to right in your own home or back yard. Even the sight of a small plant in a pot on your counter can be rejuvenating after a long day.
Creating a peaceful garden may seem like a daunting task at first, but it can become fun and rewarding activity with long-lasting benefits for both mind and body. The tips listed here can help you start to make a plan for your own special garden space no matter where you are.
Get inspired: Visit local gardens, shops or even browse magazines and the internet to get a feel for the types of gardens that catch your eye. There’s no point in putting together a garden that doesn’t appeal to your individual tastes. Do you like well-manicured gardens with clean lines, or something more sporadic and fun? Are knickknacks and trinkets hidden in the foliage your style? Or do you prefer only natural elements? These are some things to think about.
How will your garden serve you: Do you enjoy cooking with fresh herbs, having fresh cut flowers, wonderful scents or simple greenery around the house? Are you just looking for a space that inspires creativity? Or do you want your space to be a place of calm and meditation? Knowing this will help you narrow down the types of plants as well as the look and style that are best suited for you.
Consider your time: It’s not just about the time it takes to put together the initial garden, but how much time do you have to take care of it? Are you a homebody who has no problem spending hours pruning and caring for finicky plants like bonsai trees, and ornamentals? Someone who isn’t often home, and doesn’t have a lot of time or the memory to spent more than a couple minutes a week to tend to your plants? Or are you a traveller who enjoys weekends or weeks away at a time? Knowing your own lifestyle will help you choose the right garden set up so that when you haven’t watered them in 2 weeks they are still going strong.
Location: How much space do you actually have to devote to your garden? Do you want your garden outside or inside? Is there enough sunlight inside? If you’re lacking any space at all consider a vertical gardening option on an interior or exterior wall or fence, or a stackable freestanding option.
Start small: There is nothing peaceful about taking on more than you can handle. If you’re completely new to gardening start with a single low maintenance plant in a pot and add more as you become comfortable with it.
It’s obvious that there is a lot to think about when you are just beginning your gardening journey. However, keeping these tips in mind can help to streamline the process and make creating your own peaceful garden space an easy and enjoyable project.
