It’s been so long since I’ve last used a yoga wheel, and I was thrilled to partner up with 2nd Wind Health to create a restorative yin practice with their cork version. I particularly like cork yoga accessories because they have the perfect amount of give to them - not too hard where it hurts to put your body against them, but not so soft that you wobble while on them. It’s for that reason that I love this wheel.
I wanted to use the wheel as a true prop throughout the entire practice. Sometimes with a yoga wheel I feel like we have limited ideas with how they can be used. I truly tried to use the wheel throughout the entire practice, and was pleased with what I came up with. To start, we open up through the side body, back and chest, gently releasing and breathing deeply to begin to awaken the fascia. Since it’s a restorative and yin combo practice, we were holding poses for many breaths rather than flowing, and the wheel helped to sort of reflect the breathwork. As I inhaled, I’d let the wheel move ever so slightly, mimicking my own body’s slight movement with the inhale, and as I exhaled, I’d intend to get a bit deeper into the pose, allowing a bit more movement from the wheel. I suggest using the wheel like that, allowing for a bit of movement when it works to really help you ease into and out of poses.
