When I first started practicing crow pose, I’d get bruises on my upper arms. As I learned more about the pose and applied my anatomy lessons, I began to realize that if I just engaged my intercostals and rounded my back, I’d avoid the bruising. What happens when you engage your core and round your back is you wind up “perching” your bodyweight on your arms rather than “dumping” your bodyweight on your arms. When you “perch” there isn’t as much pressure on the upper arms because the core is doing quite a bit of work. I explain it more in the video below.
