A while back I had a wedding to go to and I did the thing where you buy a bunch of dresses, get so side tracked by free shipping and free returns that you don’t look closely at what you buy because you anticipate simply trying a million on and returning all but one…and then when you receive your package, you realize, oh great! I ordered a dress that was final sale. WOMP.
The good news is that this dress ended up fitting perfectly. The bad news is that my boyfriend’s herniated disc prevented us from attending the wedding, so it’s just been sitting in my closet until I realized I should try one of the trends I can’t get enough of: the slip dress with something super casual like a sweatshirt. The other bad news is that because this dress was purchased a few months ago, the exact dress is no longer available, but a neon version is under $90, this one is a gorgeous fall color, and here’s a beautiful leopard print slip dress.
The sweatshirt you see here is (an intentionally) tattered, super soft top from Monrow I thrifted in Los Angeles a while back. It’s got this faux undershirt so it looks like you’ve layered, which I sorta love (similar style here). After trying on a bunch of sweatshirts, I think that for this a-line style midi dress, a more fitted sweatshirt like this one looks best. Cropped sweatshirts didn’t cinch my waist in, so the whole shape with a cropped sweatshirt was sort of like a bag, and oversized sweatshirts kind of drowned me due to how much fabric the skirt has. Some other good sweatshirt options for a dress this style would be this pale pink sweatshirt, or this camo sweatshirt.
I paired the look with my fav Golden Goose sneaks - these are SO comfortable and honestly go with everything from jeans to dresses. They’re a bit pricey, but I always see them on secondhand sites like The Real Real.
I still have to do a double take when I see these pics because I think I’ve inadvertently felt so self conscious about my height that I’ve avoided wearing this look even though I love it on other people so much.
The way this dress moves just makes me so happy. I also really love the vibrant yellow color which I feel like is appropriate for spring, summer and fall. What do you think of the sweatshirt/ slip dress combination? Have you rocked it, or will you be on the hunt for your own variation? Let me know what you think in the comments!
