A while back I shared that the last piece of the puzzle to getting back on track with my health is figuring out my lingering skin issues. Basically, at the slightest hint of stress, my skin breaks out. I am a big believer that what's going on inside the body manifests on the outside, and am a firm believer in treating the root cause of my body's issues.
When I healed my gut though the GAPS diet, my skin got tremendously better. However, now, it seems to flare up anytime I am stressed out. I started working with a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, who also happens to be one of my best friends, and she recommended a gentle liver cleanse, liver and adrenal support, decrease in stress, and said that topically, I could apply probiotics to the face for an immediate calm down for the skin. I created a DIY face mask that I absolutely love and thought I'd share that with you today.
Ingredients:
Equal parts homemade yogurt (directions here) and cacao powder.
Directions:
Put equal parts homemade yogurt and cacao powder in a small mason jar or container to keep in the fridge. Stir everything up, and apply liberally to the face. I often do it before I get into the bath. Just as it starts to harden (about 5 minutes or so), I'll get into the bath and read for a few minutes before washing it off.
I do think homemade yogurt vs store-bought makes a huge difference because with homemade yogurt, the fermentation process is much longer (24 hours vs most store-bought versions ferment for 4 hours), so the probiotics will be higher. Yogurt contains lactic acid (a natural hydroxyl acid) and cacao powder is rich in antioxidants.
Instructions:
Apply liberally and leave on for 15 minutes. Wash off and get on with your day! :)
Why I love it:
The yogurt is super cooling and calming on angry skin so immediately, I feel instant relief. But it doesn't just stop there. Once I wash the mask off with warm water, my skin feels crazy smooth, and calm.
I'd love to hear your DIY beauty favorites! Do you ever make your own mask? What do you use?
