If you ask three different yoga instructors what they think about doing yoga while having your period, you'll get three different answers. In my opinion, there's no universally correct answer - do what feels right for your body. For me personally? I like taking it easy by doing a restorative practice or, ya know, curling up on the couch with some chocolate and an old funny movie. Sometimes the body just needs a break, you know?
Anyway, if you're inclined to practice, here are three yoga poses that may help combat all the joys of that week like headaches, cramps and irritability. :)
1. Firelog is especially great for cramps and low back tightness. Make sure to lean forward until you feel it in your hips, and keep the collarbones broad and shoulder blades drawing toward one another.
2. Supine cobbler's pose is straightforward I think, just make sure the low back is really rooted into the mat, and consider adding yoga blocks under each leg (second to last pic) for a more restorative take on this pose.
3. Wide leg child's pose is pretty much the only child's pose I do because it's my absolute favorite. Feeling the stomach against the thighs is an automatic reminder to breathe fully and deeply, and it just feels better on my knee joints to take the legs out to the side.
