About six or seven years ago, my parents announced that we weren’t going to do presents for Christmas. They were both kind of overwhelmed with everything they had going on and were disgusted by the commercialism and constant pressure to buy buy buy. I don’t remember caring that much, but my little brother who was maybe 19 years old or so, was really bummed. But instead of saying anything, he went out and got us all presents. Not just any old presents, but really, really thoughtful gifts and wrapped them all with care.

When it comes to beauty, I am probably the antithesis of the traditional yogini. I like make-up and curling irons and luxurious body oils (although I suppose that could be a form of ayurveda) but what I mean to say is that’s what I like. I think it’s fun to experiment with lash extensions (although I won’t say the same for hair extensions - had them for my wedding, woof they’re so hard to maintain). But make up or not, I feel my absolute best when I’m stress-free and at-ease.

Years ago, I used to be a Bikram fiend. I couldn't get enough, despite pretty much all but hating it while I was actually practicing. It was miserably hot but that feeling afterward? That was a natural high I rode for the rest of the day! I felt like I had just climbed Mount Everest and there was nothing I couldn't do! Row a tiny little boat around the world? Done. Run a marathon in my bare feet on the hottest day of the year? Yes. I can do anything, I wanted to shout after class.

Halloween hasn't always been one of my favorite holidays. I'm not that creative when it comes to figuring out a costume, so I always felt kinda meh about the whole thing. But then, about three or four years ago, I discovered this amazing make up palette and I realized I could just use my awesome make up skills (aka watching youtube tutorials) and the make up would essentially make the costume. Suddenly, Halloween became one of my favorite holidays and I absolutely love trying to figure out a good face I can do. It'll be hard to top last year's:

Overall, I liked school, and for the most part, didn't have a problem getting up in the morning. All the way up through high school, my mom would make us breakfast. I didn't have an alarm, I'd just smell breakfast being made from downstairs and roll out of bed. French toast one day, scrambled eggs the next, oatmeal the next, pancakes the day after - she really made an effort to start the day off on the right foot with a good, hearty breakfast. She made breakfast for us everyday, actually, but for some reason I always associate a good breakfast with the start of the school year.
